Today we’re exploring a special piece of nature most people don’t get to see — Everett Creek Preserve in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. This section of land is typically off-limits to the public and only accessible by appointment through the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, but we were lucky enough to catch it on an Open Hike Weekend.

Everett Creek Preserve is about 240 acres of longleaf pine and mixed hardwood forest, with pollinator gardens and a network of trails that help protect water quality and native habitats along Everett Creek and its tributaries. The preserve also serves as an important undeveloped buffer next to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and supports restoration efforts for native plant and animal communities.

The NC Coastal Land Trust works with local volunteers — including the North Carolina Youth Conservation Corps — to build and care for the trails and habitat areas. On select Open Hike Days (like the third Saturday of the month, September through June), the gates open to the public for self-guided exploration of this quiet forest and meadow landscape.
