Facilitator: Liza Featherstone (Jacobin, The Nation)
Despite promises that free markets and meritocracy would lead to more general freedoms, gender inequality persists under capitalism. Even as an official form of feminism has gained power in the liberal establishment, working women are left behind. As socialist-feminist Nancy Fraser has put it, “Leaning In” has often meant “Leaning On” working women of color.
In this session, we will ask: What actually is the relationship of gender to capitalism? Is gender hierarchy in its current form a result of capitalism, or does it follow its own logic? What is the difference between liberal feminism and socialist feminism? What would it take to create a society in which sexism no longer exists?

The North Brooklyn Night School aims to connect the history and theory of socialist struggle with the work of present day activists and organizers. It offers a rigorous but accessible curriculum for working adults to develop their political understanding and strategy. See our full syllabus here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1V....
Our Night School sessions are comprised of a presentation and overview of the topic at hand, often followed by smaller breakout sessions, to facilitate deeper conversation and understanding of the material, and to bring analysis to bear on present-day realities. Readings are strongly encouraged but not required, and people new to socialist politics are more than welcome! Contact us with questions or suggestions [email protected].
