Former President George W. Bush remembered the late Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis on July 30 at his funeral in Atlanta. “John Lewis always looked outward, not inward. He always thought of others. He always believed in preaching the gospel, in word and in deed,” said Bush, who spoke fondly of collaborating with the Georgia lawmaker on building the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to commemorate the anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” march for civil rights in Selma, Alabama. “John and I had our disagreements, but in the America John Lewis fought for, and the America I believe in, differences of opinion are inevitable elements and evidence of democracy in action,” said Bush. “We live in a better and nobler country today because of Lewis and his abiding faith in the power of God, democracy, and love to lift us all to a higher ground.”
