REVIEW: We Made A Beautiful Bouquet/Loved Like A Beautiful Bouquet (花束みたいな恋をした/Hanataba Mitai Na Koi O Shita)

Starring Suda Masai as Mugi and Arimura Kasami as Kuni, ‘We Made A Beautiful Bouquet’ was a film I already saw a couple of people talk about so I kinda knew what to expect. However, while I thought this was going to be similar Gekijo, it turned out to be a less painful version of it, without being short of the same level of bittersweetness.

The story is about Mugi and Kuni, two university students who met simply because they missed the last train one night. The two immediately find out they have a lot of similarities, from the shoes they wear to the authors they read and other interests. Mugi also chooses to stay with Kuni overnight instead of hanging out with a senpai from uni he was implied to have a crush on.

Their story develops from there. It was a honeymoon phase of their relationship where they felt so in love and lost in their own world. However, as with any story, life gets in the way and eventually takes a toll on their relationship.

This film, despite its 2-hour runtime, didn’t bank on grand moments to deliver its message effectively. It used details that were sprinkled all over the plot smoothly to make the viewers feel like its a relationship we were also experiencing much like the two leads. When it came to the dramatics, it never goes fully overboard, which makes the silences even more glaring in the most important moments.

Overall, I really enjoyed this film and I felt like it was well-executed. My full review above.
