STORYLINE:
Clashes broke out on Wednesday between Lebanese army soldiers and protesters outside the Egyptian Embassy in Beirut during a demonstration in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are contending with war and hunger 21 months into the offensive Israel launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

Egypt shares a border with the enclave which has been devastated by war.

Dozens of protesters had gathered outside the embassy waving Palestinian flags and chanting in support of Gaza.

"It is absolutely unacceptable, under any circumstances, for Gaza to be left alone, for Gaza to be abandoned, for Gaza’s children to be subjected to this kind of genocide," said Sheikh Ali Youssef, a protester.

Demonstrators accused the Egyptian government of contributing to the blockade in the enclave and called for the opening of the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza to allow aid in.

The protest in Beirut comes amid growing regional anger over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Experts say Gaza is at risk of famine because of Israel’s blockade and nearly two-year offensive.

Desperation is mounting in the Palestinian territory of more than 2 million.

A breakdown of law and order has led to widespread looting and contributed to chaos and violence around aid deliveries.

More than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed during the Israel-Hamas war, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals.

Its count doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says that more than half of the dead are women and children.

The U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

Hamas-led militants abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war and killed around 1,200 people. Fewer than half of the 50 hostages still in Gaza are believed to be alive.
