Want to sell or give away your iPhone 17, 17 Pro, or 17 Pro Max but keep your eSIM active for the next phone? In this video, I’ll show you how to erase your iPhone 17 series back to factory settings without deleting your eSIM.
We’ll walk through backing up your data first, then wiping everything—apps, accounts, and settings—while keeping your eSIM ready to use. Perfect for anyone upgrading, gifting, or troubleshooting their iPhone.

how to erase your iPhone 17 (any model) back to factory settings so it’s ready to sell, trade in, or hand over to a friend or family member.
With just one tap, you can wipe all your data, remove the Activation Lock, and even choose whether or not to delete your eSIM.
Before you do anything, make sure to back up your data. You can use iCloud or back up to a Mac or PC using Finder or iTunes. If you’re low on iCloud storage, you might need to upgrade your plan or back up to a computer instead so you can easily restore your data later on a new iPhone.
Open Settings, tap your Apple ID profile, then tap iCloud.
Next, select iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now to start the backup. Wait until it shows the latest backup date and time under “Last Successful Backup.”
Once the backup’s done, go back to Settings and tap General.
Scroll down to Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap Erase All Content and Settings.
You’ll see a summary screen showing what’s about to be erased: apps and data, accounts (removed from this device only—not your Apple ID), Find My/Activation Lock (disabled for this iPhone), and an option for your eSIM.
At the next prompt, you can either Keep eSIM and Erase Data or Delete Everything including eSIM.
I’m going with Keep eSIM so the cellular plan stays on the phone, but everything else—apps, accounts, passwords, messages—will be erased.
Enter your iPhone passcode to confirm.
You might be asked again if you want to do a final backup—skip it if you already backed up.
You’ll then be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to remove Activation Lock (also called “Find My”). Follow the on-screen instructions.
If you see a screen saying that security features are delaying the erase process, you’ll need to turn that off in Settings first—check out the separate tutorial I linked in the video description if that happens.
The iPhone will restart once and wipe itself clean.
That’s it—you can now set it up as brand-new. No need for a computer or third-party tools.
