But salt’s dominance did not last forever. With the invention of refrigeration and modern food storage, salt lost its role as the world’s most important preservative. Its economic power faded, but its legacy remains. From the Via Salaria in Rome to the phrase “worth his salt,” this mineral left a lasting mark on language, culture, and trade.
