Castle Dow Hillfort Tour | Pictish Fort | Relaxing Nature

'Castle Dow' or 'Caisteal Dubh' is a hillfort near a village called Balnaguard in Perthshire. It has been surveyed from the air and on-site and it is quite typical for a Pictish hillfort of the area. No excavations have been undertaken (perhaps in the future), so there is no precise dating, but it could have been occupied between the Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages. The ramparts remain, but a lot of the wall has been re-used for other purposes. What makes this hillfort a little unusual are the 19th Century cairns on top, perhaps built by Victorian adventurers. The name of the hillfort means 'Black Castle' and may refer to it's original appearance as a stone fortification. It overlooks Strathtay, a valley that the River Tay flows through, which gives it a very advantageous position and the occupants would have been able to observe approaching armies from a long distance. This hillfort also straddles the area between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands, giving access to both. While editing this video I realised that the nature around this place gave it a tranquil, peaceful atmosphere. So even though it is a hillfort tour, perhaps you will find the scenery relaxing.
