What began as a normal outing turned into a planned attack when Geyser and Weier lured Leutner into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in an attempt to appease the fictional internet character Slender Man.

Despite catastrophic injuries, Payton Leutner survived by crawling to a nearby trail, where she was discovered by a passerby who called for help. Her survival became a central and extraordinary part of this case.

Morgan Geyser was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. She pleaded guilty but was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and was committed to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, where she was sentenced to up to 40 years of confinement and treatment.
