Meet Dell’s pixel propagating UP3218K, a product unleashed in advance of its era and one beyond the modest optical parameters of many a dazzled creator.

The monitor was released in 2017, approximately three years after the company had last raised resolutions to record-setting heights with its spiritual ancestor, the UP2715K.

In keeping with tradition and to address inherent bandwidth constraints imposed by contemporary video standards, this monolithic VDU relied on seamlessly “tiling” two separate signals to render your your desktop’s vast dimensions, obtaining them from a video card equipped with a pair of Displayports supporting version 1.4 of the protocol, which provides the requisite capacity for transmitting 33 megapixels at a refresh rate of 60hz.

Though the monitor can be used to view images from two independent sources, connecting just one input or devices pre-dating the necessary Displayport revision will limit the screen to lower resolutions and refresh rates

With factory calibrated profiles for several industry standard colour spectrums and reference level coverage of each, the UP3218K was aimed squarely at industrious studio environments where its ample real-estate could comfortably accommodate multiple applications with detailed GUIs, and permit the previewing of professional source material at its native proportions free of any cropping or sailing.

Situated on the underside of its svelte and discreetly stylish chassis, the user will discover an integrated USB 3 hub with fast charging available on one of four ports and a solitary 3.5mm audio output for relaying sound received by the DisplayPort(s) to a set of stereo speakers.
Five buttons on the left of the bottom bezel reveal a relatively spartan but intuitive OSD, with all menus easily navigable and three configurable shortcut keys for instant access to frequently altered settings.

The screen allows for comprehensive fine-tuning depending on the task at hand. Four fixed operational modes comprising “standard”, “comfort view” “movie and “game” cater for common usage scenarios, with a fifth “colour space” option facilitating access to the six “industry standard” arrays referred to above.

A further “custom colour” pre-set enables channel-specific RGB governance over gain, offset hue and saturation, while “colour temperature” can be adjusted through a scale of six values ranging from 5000K to 10000K.

This particular unit was acquired for significantly less than its retail price from a supplier who specialised in “manufacturer refurbs”, which initially seemed like a risky gamble and aroused my dubious anticipation of superficial imperfections, catastrophic light leakage and clusters of stuck pixels.

Such concerns, as you can plainly observe, were unwarranted and shortly after this delectable de-boxing, this impeccably engineered embodiment of revolutionary visual virtues was afforded pride of place on my profoundly privileged work-surface.
