The Deer Hunter is a three-hour emotional mugging disguised as cinema, but It went on to win five Oscars, including Best Picture, because apparently the Academy loves trauma as long as it’s subtitled “art.” The American Film Institute even crowned it one of the greatest American films ever made, which is basically like saying, “Congratulations, you ruined us better than anyone else.” But the story of how it got made, the absolute chaos behind the camera was every bit as deranged as what made it onto the screen. Here are 20 most bizarre and dark secrets you never knew about The Deer Hunter.

The Russian roulette scenes are the film's most iconic and terrifying moments. They are scenes of almost unbearable psychological torture, and Cimino went to insane lengths to make sure the fear on the actors' faces was real. To crank up the tension, all the slapping in these scenes was 100% real.

But De Niro wasn’t satisfied with “just” hitting his coworkers in the face. Oh no. He suggested Christopher Walken should be slapped by one of the guards without warning. So Walken’s wide-eyed look of sheer betrayal wasn’t acting — it was him wondering if Hollywood had a worker’s comp policy. And then De Niro took things even further into “possible homicide” territory. He actually insisted they load a real bullet into the revolver. Don’t worry — it wasn’t in the firing chamber, and he and John Cazale checked it obsessively before every take. But the simple fact that a live round was in the cylinder infused every click of the hammer with a very real sense of death.
