32 Tejas MK1 Development Progress

It has been quite some time since we have discussed about the developmental progress of Tejas MK1 fighters and have seen comments from many of our viewers regarding the same. There are few updates that has came since November last year which we will discuss in today’s video.

AS we all know that, Indian Air Force had ordered 40 Tejas MK1 variants in the ‘initial’ and ‘full operational clearance’ configuration. It includes 32 Tejas MK1 single seater fighter jet & 8 twin-seater LCA trainer. Out of 32 Tejas MK1, 22 fighters have already been delivered which includes 16 IOC and 6 FOC Tejas MK1. As we have seen last 2 years there has been some delay in the delivery of Tejas due to covid. In the year 2020, HAL has delivered 6 FOC Tejas SP-21 to SP-26. The HAL Chief has promised for the compensating the same by working overtime. We can observe the same from the current pace of development.

If you remember our video from last year October, we have reported that the SP-27 & SP-28 Tejas are undergoing flight testing and will be soon delivered to IAF. The SP-29 & SP-30 are in the final stages of production. The SP-31 to SP-34 Tejas were under the various stages of the equipping activities. Recently the SP34/LA2030 has been spotted flying which means that the development of 30 out of 32 Tejas MK1 has been completed by HAL. In fact it has completed the production of 8 fighters in last four months which is an impressive rate of delivery. The remaining two of 32 Tejas MK1 can be expected into the advance stages of production which should be completed in a month.

73 Tejas MK1A Development Progress

The delivery of Tejas MK1A is supposed to start after 3 years of contract signing i.e. from February 2024 onwards. HAL will have to deliver Indian Air Force the first three aircraft in 2024 and 16 aircraft per year for the subsequent five years.

As reported by HAL’s Chairman, By June 2022, the LCA MK-1A will take its first flight and another 20 to 24 months of testing. Which means the production of Tejas MK1A will commence 1st quarter of FY 2024, which is as per the contractual obligation, so there are no delays. The Tejas MK-1A manufacturing & testing will progress in parallel to speed up the process. Further, to ramp up the production HAL has also setup two additional assembly lines and all three assembly lines are operational now.

Tejas MK2 Development Progress

Now, let’s take this opportunity to quickly discuss about the Tejas MK2 progress. The Preliminary Design Review(PDR) & Critical Design Review(CDR) phase has been completed for Tejas MK2.

More than 60% of pre-flight test work has been completed which includes completion and finalization of cockpit configuration, sensors, antennae, process finalization for drawing release, procurement of raw materials & its availability assessment, detailed design of various subsystems, finalization of SOPs for first flight. Tejas MK2 general systems & structures are now being manufactured and other components are in development process. HAL has started building the prototype of Tejas MK2 which is expected to get prototype ready by late 2022 or early 2023 followed by its 1st flight between 2023-24. As per HAL Chief, by 2026 all the testing of Tejas MK2 will be completed and the production activity will be started from there onwards. The year 2024 is going to be pretty interesting one as we are going to see Tejas MK1A entering into serial production, Tejas MK2 taking its 1st flight, AMCA taking its 1st flight and HAL CATS Warrior or Loyal Wingman taking its first flight. In 2025 the TEDBF will also take its 1st flight. These two years are going to be pretty exciting for the Indian aviation industry.
