The Mental Health Commission provides a range of police and court alcohol and other drug diversion programs that provide opportunities to be referred to treatment and support for people in contact with the criminal justice system.
The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Diversion Program is a voluntary court diversion program in Western Australia available for eligible adults who have alcohol and/or other drug use problems, are attending court, and need some help to get back on track. Aboriginal people attending court are encouraged to access the program. This video outline how the program works, and how you can benefit from diversion.
The program is ideally for people who are new to court, however can help people who have been in court before. If you are not in court for serious offences, are willing to plead guilty to an offence, and will be eligible for bail, this program could help you.
Aboriginal AOD Diversion Officers who can talk with you about the program are available in a range of regional magistrates courts including Broome, Kununurra, Karratha, Meekatharra, Carnarvon. They also service a range of smaller courts in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Midwest. In the metropolitan area they are available in the Perth Magistrates Court, Armadale, Fremantle Rockingham and Mandarah courts. If you are interested in the program, please ask to speak to the AOD Diversion Officer at the court you are attending.
