In Nazi Germany, speaking the truth could cost your life. And for one 17-year-old boy Helmuth, it did. Helmuth began listening secretly to the BBC — the “enemy’s radio.” He was just sixteen.
What he heard stunned him: German news was full of lies. The BBC told of defeats on the Eastern Front while Nazi radio claimed victory. Helmuth couldn’t stay silent.
With two close friends, Karl-Heinz Schnibbe and Rudi Wobbe, he began typing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets across Hamburg. They urged citizens to question the regime and think for themselves.
In February 1942, the Gestapo caught them. Helmuth was brutally interrogated and taken before the Volksgerichtshof — the People’s Court in Berlin. The judge, infamous Roland Freisler, called him a traitor. Helmuth was only seventeen when he was sentenced to death.
