Managing Gestational Diabetes
Although gestational diabetes that is not well controlled can lead to problems for both you and your baby, blood glucose levels can be managed throughout your pregnancy to reduce the risk of these potential problems. Managing gestational diabetes involves healthy eating, regular physical activity, daily blood glucose monitoring, regular antenatal checks and, for some women, medications.
After the delivery of your baby you will be screened for type 2 diabetes and provided with information to help you to reduce your (and your child’s) risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

When you are first diagnosed with gestational diabetes there is a lot to remember, therefore this section will help to support the recommendations provided by your diabetes team.

- blood glucose monitoring
- healthy eating recommendation
- the impact of carbohydrate foods on blood glucose levels
- the importance of physical activity
- medications
- antenatal checks
- delivery
- breastfeeding
- screening for type 2 Diabetes

- the National Gestational Diabetes Register (NGDR)
- screening for gestational diabetes in future pregnancies
