Function
Red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, transport oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carry waste materials like carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
Structure
Red blood cells are circular, biconcave, and lack a nucleus or organelles. They are rich in hemoglobin, a protein that contains iron and globin. Hemoglobin combines with oxygen to form oxyhemoglobin, which gives blood its red color.
Production
Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow through a process called erythropoiesis. The kidney produces a hormone called erythropoietin that controls the maturation of the red blood cells.
Life cycle
Red blood cells circulate in the body for about 100–120 days before being recycled by macrophages.
Number
In humans, there are approximately 20–30 trillion red blood cells, which make up about 84% of the cells in the body.
Clinical significance
Changes in the size, distribution, or shape of red blood cells can indicate serious health disorders. Some diseases related to red blood cell dysfunction include thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and anemia.
