Alcohol in Jordan is quite a sensitive topic. While the country is very liberal by Middle Eastern standards, over 90% of the population is Muslim, so it is absolutely essential to be respectful to local customs and traditions.

A safe bet to find alcohol in Jordan are Christian communities, where alcohol is consumed as part of everyday life and not even remotely frowned upon. In this vlog I decided to visit the Jordanian town of Fuheis (الفحيص) located about 13kms from the capital Amman and home to a very big Christian community.

Jordan contains one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, their presence dating back to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ early in the 1st century AD. Christians today make up about 3% of the population. Jordanian Christians in a country of almost 10 million are thought to number 250,000–400,000. Jordan's Arab Christians are exceptionally well integrated in the Jordanian society and enjoy a high level of freedom.

Nonetheless, even when visiting Christian areas DO NOT forget that Jordan is largely a Muslim country and even if drinking alcohol in Jordan is not a social taboo in cities and big towns you should always be mindful of your behaviour. You can normally find alcohol in high-end bars and restaurants but remember that it is ALWAYS ILLEGAL to consume it in the street, regardless of where you are.

Since it is the case for every part of the world and the first rule of being a successful traveller, let me reiterate: you should ALWAYS respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and ensure your actions don’t offend anyone.
