How to Drink Fernet Branca: Drink This Tonight #9

Today we'll explore the mysteries and wonders of Fernet Branca, the wondrous Italian digestif that some have likened to a combination of Listerine and Penzoil. It's not for the faint of heart, yet it is beloved by San Francisco bartenders and patrons alike. It's often known as the bartender's handshake, and is shot with a ginger back.

Once you get used to Fernet's strong personality, it actually mixes really well into many a well-balanced cocktail. Today we'll look at two such cocktails:

Batman vs. Superman (original)
1.5 oz Fernet Branca
1.5 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liquor
Freshly grated nutmeg

Stir and pour over large ice cube in a rocks glass. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Hanky Panky (classic)
1.5 oz London Dry Gin
1.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
One dash Fernet Branca

Stir and serve in a cocktail coupe.
