After a full year of buying limes and cracking them open to see that no seeds exist, I finally found one that had seeds, and then a full year passed after trying to grow the seeds into a tree.
Now, there’s a reason it took me a full year to find a lime with seeds, because only key limes produce seeds, and I live in Canada and you really can’t find key limes in the grocery stores, it's a rare occurrence when that happens.
The ones we find in our grocery stores are the seedless varieties, which are usually Persian limes and Bears limes. But...it’s the key lime that has smaller, has a more intense flavour/aroma, and is totally growable.
So, if you want to grow them, first you gotta remove the outer layer of skin from the seeds, which is just a step that allows the seeds to grow faster, you are basically optimizing your chances of growth here because I've done experiments both ways where I try growing limes with skin and limes without, and the ones without the outer layer of skin always grow a lot faster than the ones with.
The same goes for lemons, oranges, grapefruits, other citrus fruits. But anyway, ya so you’ll get the seeds on a piece of damp paper towel, you’ll fold it up and spritz it with water so that the paper towel is damp, you’ll want to make sure to check them every so often and keep shpritzing the paper towel with water so the tails can stay damp, since they thrive in a damp climate off the paper towel.
You’ll want to seal that paper towel in a glass jar and keep it air tight, I even like to keep my sealed jar with the seeds inside near a sunny window, but a lot of other botanists like to keep the sealed jar in a dark place like in your cupboard, but you can try whichever one you like. I just find they grow faster in the sunlight, but you’ll have to spray it with water more often to keep the paper towel damp.
that you can then plant in soil! And if youre lucky, you’ll see they’ll germinate in just a few days. The tails will grow and it will be really exciting, and then once the tails are about 3-4 inches in length, you can think about transplanting them in soil, you can just put them right in there and then you wait patiently and watch your growth.
When it comes to growing limes, the first thing you need to know is that they thrive in warm and humid climates. If you live in a colder area, you'll need to grow your limes in a greenhouse or indoors, or be like us and try what is difficult since were in the freezing cold Canada.
They also prefer well-drained soil and full sunlight, so make sure to plant them in an area that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
