Walking Around The Entire Singapore Bay! Merlion, Marina Bay Sand, Helix Bridge

We first thought we’d walk to a hawker centre nearby, but it was closed on Thursdays. We decided to walk to another hawker centre 15 minutes away, it was closed for construction….so we found a little food centre on Larong Geylang called “Food Haven” and decided to have lunch. We “bravely”, after 10 minutes of staring and being scared, walked up to a stall and ordered two plates of seafood fried rice. The man at the counter gave us a buzzer and we chose our seats. We sat on yellow and orange plastic chairs (oh asia!). Our buzzer buzzed and I walked over to get our food. It proved to be too much for me to carry, so the nice man carried the plates to the table as I got chilli oil and a dish. The fried rice was lovely and comforting and we devoured it. Jives then ordered us a big Tiger beer to share from a different booth. The beer was $8, but the food was only $12 so $20 for a meal isn’t half bad (the Canadian dollar is exactly the same value as the Singapore dollar, which makes Singapore the easiest country to visit as Canadians). We slowly drank our beer, absorbing the surroundings, man was it good to be back in Asia, our second home. We then walked to a park called Kallang Riverside Park, and wandered for hours along the banks of the Kallang River. There were many signs warning of otters!!!! We then crossed to Kampong Glam, another park then along the Marina Promenade where they were taking apart structures from the F1 races. We rested under Shears Avenue Bridge in the shade and saw a very odd sight, a 5 foot plus long lizard thing swimming just feet from us…it looked like a Kamodo dragon… it was terrifying. Some research tells me it was probably a Malayan water monitor. They grow up to 3 metres long. We then walked along the Helix bridge to the Marina Bay Hotel and Art and Science Museum. This museum was surrounded by beautiful purple water lilies. We kept wandering along the water towards the Merlion, happening upon a relay race. The merlion was in a construction box. No merlion viewing for us. Bummer.
We then walked to the city hall metro where we went to a 711, getting instant noodles, Mala spicy chips, mushroom strawberry cookies and three beers for $6 before hopping on the metro back to our hotel. We had a little picnic in our room and went to sleep around 8:30 pm. We had a very full first day in Singapore!
