The Economic Community of West African States. The regional bloc that’s been holding hands, singing kumbaya, and pushing for economic and political unity since 1975. But right now, unity is taking a nosedive faster than you can say "coup d'état".
So Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso aka the Sahel trio are still very serious about walking out of the regional bloc like kids slamming the door after a family argument. They’ve told ECOWAS: “We’re done. Finished. Jan. 29, 2025. Mark the date.”
But ECOWAS isn’t giving up. Nope. The bloc is pulling the classic ex-it’s-complicated move by offering the junta-led states a six-month grace period from January to July 2025 to rethink their decision. Sounds a bit like your friend begging their ex to “just talk things through foreclosure.”
