The Arizona Phenoms, a group of visually impaired athletes, have taken on the sport of Beep Baseball. The program will head to Rochester, NY to compete in the World Series of Beep Baseball.

“We fell in love with the sport."

“It’s really fun. I like it.”

It’s a sport created for the visually impaired where athletes must use their ears to make a play. Here’s how it works: each player is blindfolded to even the field. It’s the pitcher’s job to help the batter get a hit and when connected the race is on. There are two bases but the batter only runs to the one emitting a solid tone. If he reaches before the defense fields the beeping ball, he scores a run. If not, he’s out.

“We’re very excited. We’ve been practicing really hard and we’re going to make this happen for ourselves.”

The Arizona Phenoms are a first-year program ready to put their talents on display at the big stage: the 2015 Beep Baseball World Series in Rochester, New York.

“I’ve heard that there are a lot of players that are really good, competitive-wise they’re really good. I hope I bring something to the table.”

“When we get to the World Series there are people there you identify with. You kind of get to see what visually impaired and blind people can accomplish, especially in the sports area.”

Those accomplishments are limitless. From diving stops to scoring runs and of course, everyone’s favorite.

“Hitting home runs. When you know you hit the ball and it’s out there, you’re trying to get that base and point for your team, that’s what I want. That’s what I want for the World Series.”
