Fayetteville is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Georgia, United States.[4] As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 18,957,[5] up from 15,945 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is located 22 miles (35 km) south of downtown Atlanta.[6]

In 2015 the city elected its first African-American mayor, Edward Johnson, a retired US navy commander and pastor. In 2011 he was elected as the first black city council member. He was a three-term president of the NAACP.[7][8]
