In this post we are learn about the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple history.
Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is located in Kottayam district of Kerala. Vaikom, also known as Thiruvaikkam, is the oldest and most famous Saiva temple in Kerala.
In the sanctum sanctorum of this temple, a four-foot-high Shiva lingam is installed on a two-foot-high pedestal, facing east. Although the main deity Shiva has the name Mahadeva, he is affectionately known as Vaikathappan by most of the people. The deity of this temple is also called ‘Vyakrapuriswarar’ because he was worshipped by the tiger-leg sage Vyakrapathar.
This Vaikom Mahadeva is the embodiment of wisdom who grants whatever one asks.
The lingam here is believed to belong to the Treta Yuga.
The Vaikom Mahadeva lingam is decorated with a crescent moon called Chandrakala, nose-eyes, and a band of water. Beautiful flower garlands further beautify the deity.
Below the lingam, on the upper part of the robe, a robe made of pure gold represents the form of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, who is depicted with four holy hands, is seen holding a deer in one hand and a mazhu in the other, while holding the abhaya varada mudras.
Seeing the form of Vaikathappan in the light of the lamp is a sight to behold.
The temple is spread over an area of about 8 acres and is built in the Kerala style of architecture. There are two sections within the temple complex, the Mukha Mandapam and the Garbhagraham. Beautiful sculptures and colorful herbal paintings are found around the circular garbhagraham.
A demon named Kara, who received Shaiva Vidya teachings from Malyava, went to Chidambaram and performed severe penance to attain salvation. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva gave him three Shivalingas and said, ‘If you worship these three Shivalingas, you will attain salvation.’ Kara went south with the three Shivalingas. Lord Shiva also sent the tiger-footed sage Vyagrapadar to follow him.
Carrying one Shivalinga in his right hand, another in his left hand, and the third in his mouth, the demon placed the Shivalinga in his right hand somewhere to rest for a while due to the fatigue of the journey. After some time, he tried to pick up the Shivalinga that he had put down. But he could not.
Then he requested Vyagrapadar, who had arrived there, to worship and worship that Shivalinga. Vyagrapadar, who had carried it, stayed at that place and worshipped the Shivalinga for a long time.
The demon continued his journey with the remaining two Shivalingas. When he reached a place called Manur, he installed the Shivalinga in his left hand facing west and worshipped it. Then he installed the Shivalinga he had in his mouth facing east and worshipped it. Through this, he attained salvation.
Later, when Parashurama was traveling northward through the sky with his yogic power, Garuda made a noise. As a sign of that good omen, he looked down and saw a Shivalinga half submerged in water, the color of a lotus. After that, Parashurama came down, took out the Shivalinga, washed it, set up a pedestal, installed it according to the shastras, and worshipped it. This detail is given in the Pargava Purana, which is the basis of the Vaikom Thala Purana.
