Do you know why all the snakes in the world were once being burned?
According to the Mahabharata, King Parikshit, the son of Abhimanyu, was killed by the bite of the serpent Takshak. Enraged by his father’s death, Parikshit’s son Janamejaya performed a great snake sacrifice (Sarpasatra) to destroy the entire serpent race.
As the powerful fire ritual began, countless snakes started falling into the sacrificial fire one after another. However, when Takshak was summoned, he sought refuge in Indralok (the abode of Indra) and clung to Lord Indra's throne.
But the power of the yagna was so immense that even Indra’s throne, along with Takshak, began to be pulled toward the sacrificial fire. Witnessing this, the serpent king Vasuki approached Goddess Manasa and pleaded for help.
Moved by his devotion, Goddess Manasa sent her son Astika to stop the yagna. Astika approached King Janamejaya and wisely persuaded him to end the sacrifice.
Pleased with his intervention, Vasuki blessed Astika, saying that “Whoever chants your name shall never fear serpents. Upon hearing your name, snakes will turn away and change their path.”
