Join the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools as we explore excellent low- and no-cost spots where families can learn, connect and make memories all summer long.

Today’s stop: Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County
If your family loves dinosaur movies, imagine seeing real-life Ice Age giants up close! The Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County, located at the Fairmead Landfill, home to the largest middle-Pleistocene fossil excavation site in North America, is packed with amazing history and science. Step inside and be greeted by a towering mammoth, then explore exhibits featuring actual fossils and replicas of the saber-toothed cat, giant sloth, dire wolf, camel, horse and more. You’ll also discover Native American artifacts that connect the land’s prehistoric past to its cultural heritage.
Outside, kids can “dig for fossils” in a covered sand pit and wander around a peaceful pond surrounded by native plants. It’s hands-on, fascinating and a spark for young minds. Who knows? You might inspire a future paleontologist or archaeologist!
