The 1965 Italian Gothic horror film, *Nightmare Castle* (original title: *Gli Amanti d'oltretomba*), is a tale of murder, madness, and supernatural revenge, starring Barbara Steele in a dual role.

The plot centers on *Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith**, a cruel, sadistic scientist. When he discovers his wife, **Muriel* (Barbara Steele), is having an affair with a gardener, he brutally tortures and murders them both in his castle laboratory. He then removes their hearts, which he preserves, and uses Muriel's blood to rejuvenate his aging lover, the servant Solange.

Arrowsmith discovers that Muriel has willed her entire fortune and the castle not to him, but to her mentally fragile stepsister, *Jenny* (also played by Barbara Steele). He quickly woos and marries Jenny, planning to "gaslight" and drive her insane with the help of Solange so he can gain control of the inheritance.

However, Jenny begins to be tormented by strange visions, nightmares, and the sound of beating hearts—the vengeful spirit of Muriel is returning from the grave. The film culminates in the ghosts of the murdered pair returning to exact their bloody revenge on Arrowsmith and Solange.
