EPIC Rim Rock Drive in Colorado National Monument - A Bucket List National Scenic Road

Bighorn Sheep grazed and greeted us alongside this super scenic 23 mile drive: Rim Rock Drive. Giant Monoliths pepper the valley while sheer canyon walls bounce back sunbeams. This drive has been called one of the United States' top drives as it traces this edge of the Colorado Plateau near Grand Junction and Fruita, Colorado. It's also just south of Dinosaur National Monument, which was on our trip and a must visit. The Colorado Monument is east of the Moab, Utah and Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. Colorado is known for scenic drives and parks (check out Hovenweep National Monument to the south).
The history of this Colorado Monument is interesting. The area was "discovered" by John Otto, who has many features named after him, including Otto's Trail. It was built in part by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and finished in the 1950s.
The road is an easy drive with great handicapped access, trailheads like Devil's Kitchen, Coke Ovens, Ute Canyon, No Thoroughfare Canyon, Liberty Cap and many more.
Be sure to stop at lookouts like GrandView, Artists Point and save time for Window Rock and Cold Shivers Point.
How much time to spend? You can drive it in under an hour - probably two. We spend two days driving back and forth in order to capture some of the best 4K video for Rim Rock Drive.
