This week on ThursDev, Luke gets into the idea of making a good first impression with your game. In an era of extreme market saturation and absurdly cheap alternatives to any game, the first few minutes that your players spend with your game are crucial in creating a good first impression. Luke talks about the concept of the FTUE, or First Time User Experience, which is the introductory period of your game to a player who's trying it for the first time, from the moment of boot to the time they exit the tutorial and begin to play their game "on their own".

Luke looks at the most common components of the FTUE and a number of the major pitfalls that a number of developers fall into when designing - or in some cases not designing - the first experience of their game, and what a developer can do to engage players right from the start, and boost retention by keeping players interested into the rest of the game.
