India recently signed a major defense deal with the U.S. to acquire 31 MQ-9B Predator drones, worth approximately ₹32,000 crore ($4 billion). This deal, formalized in October 2024, is part of India’s efforts to enhance its surveillance and strike capabilities, particularly along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), where Chinese activities are of concern.

The deal includes two variants of the MQ-9B: 16 Sky Guardians for the Indian Army and Air Force, and 15 Sea Guardians for the Indian Navy. These drones are highly capable, with a flight endurance of up to 40 hours at altitudes exceeding 40,000 feet. They are armed with Hellfire missiles and smart bombs, enabling both surveillance and precision strike missions.

The drones will be based at strategic locations, including Gorakhpur, Sarsawa, and Porbandar, to cover critical areas along the northern borders and maritime zones. Additionally, the U.S. will help establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India, contributing to India's push for defense self-reliance.
