Karnataka is actively enhancing its railway infrastructure through several key projects aimed at improving connectivity and transportation efficiency across the state. Here are some notable initiatives:

1. Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP):

The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project is an ambitious endeavor to establish a dedicated suburban rail network within the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region. The project encompasses four corridors, collectively spanning approximately 149 kilometers and comprising 58 stations. These corridors are:

Corridor 1 (Sampige Line): Connecting KSR Bengaluru to Devanahalli and Kempegowda International Airport. This line is planned to be constructed in two phases, with completion expected by June 2029.

Corridor 2 (Mallige Line): Stretching 25.01 kilometers from Baiyappanahalli to Chikkabanavara. Construction commenced in mid-2023, with plans to operationalize this corridor by December 2026.

Corridor 3 (Parijaata Line): Currently under review due to alignment considerations with existing metro lines. Discussions are ongoing regarding its feasibility and integration.

Corridor 4 (Kanaka Line): Extending 46.24 kilometers from Heelalige to Rajanukunte. Construction contracts have been awarded, with completion targeted for December 2026.


The BSRP aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a reliable public transportation alternative in Bengaluru. The project's estimated cost is ₹18,600 crore, with funding facilitated through a combination of equity contributions and external assistance.

2. Tumakuru-Chitradurga-Davangere New Railway Line:

This project involves constructing a new broad-gauge (BG) single line covering approximately 41 kilometers between Thimmarajanahalli and Tavarekere. The initiative aims to bolster connectivity between North and South Karnataka, facilitating smoother transportation and economic integration.

3. Hubballi-Ankola Railway Line:

Approved by the Karnataka State Wildlife Board in March 2020, this 164.44-kilometer railway line aims to connect Hubballi to Ankola, passing through the ecologically sensits. The project has faced environmental concerns due to the proposed felling of approximately 2.2 lakh trees. Despite these challenges, the project is considered significant for enhancing freight movement between the hinterlands and ports on the western coast.

4. Station Construction and Upgrades:

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), in a joint e, secured a ₹613 crore contract for constructing nine stations as part of the BSRP. This project includes one elevated and eight at-grade stations, with a completion timeline of 24 months from the award date in November 2024.

These projects collectively underscore Karnataka's commitment to expanding and modernizing its railway infrastructure, aiming to enhance regional connectivity and support economic growth.
