Sergeant Johnson Beharry was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry given to members of the British military, for extreme heroism in 2004.

“Maybe I was brave, I don't know. At the time I was just doing the job, I didn't have time for other thoughts.”

The story of Johnson Beharry is truly inspiring. He tells how he was driving his vehicle on patrol in Iraq with his platoon when fire erupted and the vehicle was hit. Not knowing if the people he was carrying in the Warrior armoured car were alive or dead, he decided to get the vehicle out of danger, and then see who was alive, and get them to safety.

The following month, having recovered from his wounds, his vehicle was ambushed again.

Despite being under continuous enemy fire and injured, he removed all his comrades to safety, and then tried to make sure that his vehicle did not fall into enemy hands. Despite all the odds, he survived to tell the story, the story of a hero in Iraq.
