At certain moments, Attack on Titan doesn't quite feel like your run of the mill shonen. Those are my favorite moments because there's few anime in this genre that executes scenes like this well. These scenes are designed to terrify, surprise, suspend disbelief, and leave you in this dread. Part of how horror works, requires that you have some preconceived notion about your reality, the fictional world’s, and I would argue even genre conventions.
