Proceed down this pathway to enter a unique subterranean room—one of the many “Skyspaces” James Turrell has created around the world. Each of these unique chambers features a large opening to frame a view of the sky. Benches inside offer a place to pause and experience nature at its most elemental.

Turrell’s materials of choice are light and space, which come together in the room here. The space is washed in both natural and artificial light that heightens near dawn and dusk, marking the beginning and end of each day. As the interior fills with illuminated color, the infinite sky beyond appears almost within reach. The artist describes this effect as “bringing the sky down.”

Since the 1960s, Turrell has explored the possibilities of perception through works that transform the act of seeing into an immersive physical experience. "Sky Pesher, 2005" was created for the Walker Art Center in conjunction with the opening of its silver mesh-clad building designed by Herzog & de Meuron. “Pesher” in the title is from a Hebrew word meaning “interpretation”—by framing the sky, Turrell invites us to contemplate a sight both familiar and profound.
