When Pixar’s Lightyear was first announced first impressions from long-time Buzz fans assumed it would be a Toy Story prequel or sequel, but they couldn’t have been more wrong. The film follows the origin story of the real Buzz Lightyear, the one our toy Buzz is based off of.

He’s a legendary Space Ranger who is sent on an assignment to a planet millions of light-years away with the rest of his crew. In order to try and get back home, he makes unlikely friends and is faced with his ultimate archnemesis Emperor Zurg.

But–despite the obvious similarities of characters, there’s not much else that Toy Story and Lightyear have in common, in fact, there are a whole lot more differences. From different voice actors to new sidekicks, and even the way Buzz is animated in Lightyear are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the changes.

Of course, with this Buzz being an actual person instead of a toy, the differences were expected, however, it’s still interesting to get to know why these differences exist and what the creators were thinking when they decided upon them.

So what do you think? Is Lighteryear as good as the Toy Story films? Did you notice any other differences between the two films? Let us know in the comment section below.
