Trains at Manchester Airport (SL) - 13/02/2024

The 210th video of my train spotting adventures.

Following on from Oxford Road station, we travel south of Manchester's inner city regions to its outer towns and suburbs, in this instance to the parish of Ringway, where Manchester Airport and its railway station reside. A medium-sized 4-platform airport terminal railway, tram, bus and coach station, it was opened at the same time as Manchester Airports second air terminal in 1993.

The nearby Styal Line was extended with a triangular branch connecting to the new airport station, allowing trains to/from Manchester and Crewe to service the airport. Alongside this, the Manchester Metrolink has a line servicing the airport station, which branches from the former Midland Railway's Manchester South District line from Manchester Central station, now a Metrolink line to East Didsbury.

Initially only two platforms were present at the station. In 2008 a third platform was introduced, and later support was placed down for a fourth platform after 2012. Construction began in 2014, and completed by 2015, three years earlier than the original 2018 finish date, mostly to ensure it could be present for the Ordsall Chord services, which today comprise the Transpennine Express services to/from Saltburn.
