Enjoy the beautiful sounds of Hindustani Classical music performed by the talented members of the UCLA Music of India Ensemble. This performance took place at Chancellor Gene Block's house on April 24th, 2013. The group showcases the traditional Indian raga Desh, which is typically played in the evening. The performance starts with a soulful alap/jor, an introduction to the raga performed by violins and sitars, followed by the gat, a composition set to a rhythm cycle, or taal. Throughout the gat, you'll hear mesmerizing tabla, violin and sitar solos.

Handout Program Notes:
We are performing a short rendition of an Indian classical music piece. The title of the piece, or raga, is called Desh. Desh is a raga typically played in the evening, so the time of day for the performance will be appropriate. The performance will start with a short alap/jor, which is an introduction of the raga performed by the violins and sitars. This section is characterized by slower, contemplative movements that are improvised. After the alap/jor, the entire group (tablas, violins and sitars) will play the gat, a composition set to a rhythm cycle, or taal. Interspersed within the gat will be improvised tabla, violin and sitar solos.
