"negative mercury" for two pianos, percussion, samples, and live processing (2022-23)

Composed as part of the Yarn/Wire artist-in-residence program at the University of Pennsylvania, "negative mercury" was written in close collaboration with Yarn/Wire members Russell Greenberg, Sae Hashimoto, Laura Barger, and Julia Den Boer, who premiered the work in 2022.

The title, "negative mercury", is deliberately open-ended, inviting multiple interpretations. Through the interplay of two pianos, multi-percussion, samples, and live processing, "negative mercury" explores the boundaries between acoustic and digital sound, creating an ever-shifting soundscape where colors and textures transform fluidly. These transformations serve as metaphors for the warping of time, leading through collapsing temporal dimensions and destabilized sonic terrains.

The work is dedicated to James Primosch (1956–2021).
