In this episode we explore a critical and often overlooked perspective in the debate over girls’ education in Afghanistan: the support coming from Pakistani religious scholars. Despite restrictive policies implemented by the de facto authorities in Kabul that bar girls from secondary and higher education, prominent clerics and ulema in Pakistan have publicly declared that denying girls access to learning has no basis in Islamic teachings and must be reversed. These scholars, from institutions including those with historical ties across the border, assert that education for women and men alike is a religious obligation and essential for the social and economic wellbeing of Afghan society.
