My Virtual Kitchen Assistsnt. Here’s an example of the many uses: projecting life-size plating techniques that I can replicate with actual ingredients.

Retrofitted this 1962 Omega B22 Darkroom Enlarger into an Accent + Presentation Lighting System for my Kitchen.

I plan to replace the enlarger lamp assembly with a RIF6 Cube Portable Full LED Projector that will fit nicely inside the condenser lamphouse. Wiring will be routed inside the aluminum column and down through the modular countertop to the cabinet below.

The retrofitted system allows me project video, still images or just lighting to the countertop below. Different uses include: playing cooking tutorials, receipes, or presentation lighting respectively. I can also mount my iPhone on the slide tray to film my cooking techniques.

I took the entire unit apart for a thorough cleaning of nearly 60 years of dirt and chemical buildup. Every inch of the enlarger was also sanitized for food safety since it’s be to used in my kitchen.

The forward tilting column has a semi cantilevered floating effect. The rear base mount frees up the front two-thirds of the countertop for food preparation while allowing the projected light to be centered over the subject. The adjustable sliding assembly allows for control over the size of the projected image. The vintage mechanical bellows adjustment allows for precise focus.

For the History Geeks: The B22 was perhaps the most popular of all the Omega medium format enlargers. It had a long production run and thousands of them were sold to schools, clubs, other institutions and home darkroom enthusiasts due to their solid design and construction.

This idea may be a world’s first since I haven’t found anything like it in the Google universe. At first glance, it looks like a 1960’s era piece as all the tech will be well hidden inside the unit. I love projects like this where I can merge old with new to create something completely original and functional. My motto has always been, “Recycle, reimagine and repurpose.” I believe this project hits the mark.
