Privacy@Michigan hosted a panel discussion on privacy and cybersecurity issues, featuring U-M faculty, following a free screening of the 1984 film adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 at the historic Michigan Theater on March 6, 2024. Admission was free, and the screening was open to the general public.

Panelists included:
• CHRISTIAN DAVENPORT: Mary Ann and Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Professor for the Study of Human Understanding; Professor of Political Science, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; Professor of Public Policy, Gerald R Ford School of Public Policy, and Faculty Associate, Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research

Christian Davenport is a Professor of Political Science at U-M as well as a Faculty Associate at the Center for Political Studies and Research Professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). Primary research interests include political conflict (e.g., human rights violations, genocide/politicide, torture, political surveillance, civil war and social movements), measurement, racism and popular culture. He is the author of six books.

• BARBARA L. McQUADE: Professor from Practice at Michigan Law

Barbara L. McQuade, BA ‘87, JD ‘91, is a professor from practice at Michigan Law. Her interests include criminal law, criminal procedure, national security, data privacy, and civil rights. From 2010 to 2017, McQuade served as the US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Appointed by President Barack Obama, she was the first woman to serve in her position. McQuade is the author of Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America.

• SOL BERMANN: (moderator) Executive Director of Information Assurance and Chief Information Security Officer, Clinical Assistant Professor of Information and Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information

Sol Bermann is the Executive Director of Information Assurance and Chief Information Security Officer for the University of Michigan. He is responsible for the university’s information assurance (IT security, privacy, IT policy, compliance, and enterprise continuity) program. Sol is also Clinical Assistant Professor in UMSI where he teaches a course on Privacy & Surveillance. Sol is active in myriad higher ed security and privacy communities and has written numerous publications.
