Ribbon replaces comb binding on a bound book. I received a vintage book bound with plastic comb which had perished and broken apart. Using ribbon to hold the book together, I found I preferred the ribbon version. These plastic combs are useful in binding school projects, catalogues etc but I really don't like seeing them on my bookcase. They don't sit nicely with 'proper' books which have titles down the spine. If you attempt this with your own plastic bound books, keep the plastic comb in case you want to revert back to that.
