In US news and current events today, Phexxi by EvoFem Biosciences is a gel that was formulated to create ‘an acidic environment that is inhospitable to sperm.’ The non-hormonal birth control is used  as a single dose. Before sex, the gel is inserted into the vagina with an applicator. The gel is designed to maintain vaginal pH levels. The usual pH level of a vagina is 3.5 to 4.5 but when it encounters sperm, the pH is raised to approximately 7 or 8. Phexxi’s formula is designed to stop that increase, which in turn will effectively kill the sperm. Phexxi won’t work if it’s administered after sex.
