Can a fan fall off the ceiling?

Ceiling fans are unlikely to fall off the ceiling unless they are improperly installed or an unlikely material failure. Installing the ceiling fan with a safety rope is an extra safety feature. It secures the fan to the ceiling hook and avoids the fan from falling even in the case of material failure. As per the IS374:2019 standards ceiling fans are required to be sold along with safety rope assembly.

This accessory will be available in all ceiling fans from June 2022, when the mandatory star labelling takes effect.

Steps to install ceiling fans with safety rope:

Step 1: Unscrew the metal clamp in the ceiling fan safety rope. The clamp slits into two pieces. Unwind the rope apart. Insert the un-beaded end of the safety rope through the support clip from bottom to top. Pull the safety rope until the beaded end to the support clip. Thread the un-beaded end of the safety rope through the hole at the bottom end of the down rod.

Step 2: Pull the safety rope through the opening at the top end of the ceiling fan down rod. Fix the shackle kit in the ceiling hook. Ensure the tightness of the shackle nut, so that the rubber support holds the clamp in the ceiling firmly. Use the cotter pin to secure it.

Step 3: Further, fix the ceiling fan assembly onto the shackle using a bolt-spring washer, and the nut to ensure its tightness. Use the Cotter pin to secure further. After the fan is secured by the shackle kit thread the un-beaded end of the safety rope with the ceiling hook.

Step 4: Leave a slack on the safety rope loop such that the ceiling fan is not supported by the safety rope alone. Fasten the other piece of the metal clamp onto the loop twice using screw and nut, this secures the safety rope. Fold the free end of the safety rope back into the down rod.
