STORYLINE:

In the tribal areas that border Afghanistan, the Pakistani government has little or no control over the regions.

Instead they've long been governed by tribal rulers.

Here, in border areas such a Khoyzai, the Taliban can operate freely.

With the refugee crisis deepening on Afghanistan's borders, people fleeing the bombardments and fighting are seen passing through a manned checkpoint.

Supporters often congregate at religious schools here, so they can gather and organise hiding places for their weapons in case of attacks by the US.

The fighters here say they will never submit to American military action and condemn the Pakistani government's cooperation with the US government.

All are willing to show they're ready to repel US forces.

Many of them are children, dwarfed by their weapons.

In Mohmand, another similar border area, more supporters are preparing for battle.

They gather in a "madrassa", or religious school to be given weapons.

One wears a bandana with the Urdu inscription "Victory or Martyrdom".
