True Vintage Repair - Darning and Patches

My lovely friend asked if I had the ability to help mend one of her well loved true vintage dresses. This material has a visible weave to it and the strings are starting to break at the seam areas, particularly at the armpit. One side was entirely too large to darn (but I did try), and in the end I used a patch. I got the patch from the hem, which gave me then an excuse to put a bright green satin patch there. I also used my modern sewing machine to stitch her name into the patch. Why? Just because I could and the idea delighted me. I also repaired the shoulder pad and attached that back to the shoulder. The zipper was carefully looked at to make sure nothing was pulling away. The other armpit needed a mild amount of reinforcement. I very much liked being able to look at the construction of the dress. Both armpits were reinforced with a white material. I have no idea how that was placed and sewn in without it actually showing.

I think the trick to a repair is to be able to catch problems super early. The smaller the problem, the easier it is to fix with a simple few stitches.
Once you are repairing something, really look at the way everything has been constructed. Look at what options you have for patches or darning. Many repairs offer up stylistic opportunities.
