In 1984, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure proposed collective philanthropy to gather money for Ethiopian anti-famine efforts. They recorded "Feed the World and Let Them Know It's Christmas Day." with British and Irish performers. Harry Belanfonte assembled famed musicians like Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, and others to create an American charity version of the notion. Columbia Records released "We Are the World" as the album's first single in 1985. It topped global music charts and became the fastest-selling U.S. pop hit ever, raising nearly $80 million ($222 million now) for African and American humanitarian assistance.

African Children's replied in 1986 with a musical reenactment expressing gratitude for the beneficial efforts. This video captures the African Children's Response to the USA for Africa and Band Aid Benefit Projects.
