Welcome, in this video I show you how to make Olaf from Frozen in the form of a fun paper puppet.

This video is more of an overview of my building process than a detailed tutorial, however there should be enough info in the video for you to give it a go, therefore I’ve shared below (for free) the PDF template that I designed in order to make him.

Template & Material Breakdown:

I recommend using 160-190gsm thickness white paper, as standard printer paper (80gsm) will be too flimsy for the body sections.

Page 1 - Introduction (no need to print)
Page 2 - Olaf face (white paper)
Page 3 - Jaw & extra cheek strengtheners (white paper)
Page 4 - Mouth, finger straps for mouth movement & various mouth and finger strap strengtheners (white paper)
Page 5 - Top of head (white paper)
Page 6 - Upper body (white paper)
Page 7 - Top of upper body, top and bottom of feet, strengtheners for top of feet and bottom of lower body, strengtheners for top of upper body and bottom of jaw, hair supports for top of head (white paper)
Page 8 - Lower body part 1 (white paper) - notice the left and right side patterns are slightly different - make sure the left sides of each of the three pieces align when glued
Page 9 - Lower body part 2 (white paper)
Page 10 - Lower body part 3 (white paper)
Page 11 - Top of lower body with strengthener & teeth (white paper)
Page 12 - Bottom of lower body with holding strap and strengtheners (white paper)
Page 13 - Feet & extra cheek sections (white paper)
Page 14 - Carrot nose (orange paper or coloured in orange - can be 80gsm thickness)
Page 15 - Internal mouth & coal buttons (dark blue/purple paper or can be coloured in - can be 80gsm thickness - either colour the coal buttons black or cut them out and trace around them onto black paper)
Page 16 - Arms, hair & eyebrows (brown paper - I recommend glueing an extra brown sheet to this one before folding and cutting to give these parts xtra thickness and strength)

Additionally you will need:

2 paper fasteners
Some white wool (you need to be able to thread it through a large needle)
A 4cm diameter polystyrene ball for his eyes (gives the puppet a bit more character, but not essential)

Tools:

Printer (I recommend printing the template on 'A4' paper either via your web browser or via Adobe Acrobat Reader and make sure to print the pages at 100% scale / you should also be able to print it out on 'legal' or ‘letter’ size paper using the ‘scale to fit’ option - the A4 size edges will be marked out when you print). Printing on ‘Letter’ sized paper will shrink the overall puppet size slightly.
Cutting board
Glue sticks
Wooden skewer / spatula (to spread the glue)
Ruler (ideally metal)
Metal pointer or ball point pen that has run out of ink (to score the paper folds)
Scissors / Craft knife
Black marker pen
Black ball point pen
Wool threading needle
