EAGLE LAKE TRAIL is a ~1.6 mile hike along the southern & 1/2 of the eastern shore of Eagle Lake. It is a hike that can be difficult for a few reasons. The trail has both boggy sections, rocky sections, & a boulder section. These are interspersed w/flat pine needle paths... so there are places for respite if needed. Another reason is the location of the trailheads. Both are on Eagle Lake Carriage Road but using this as a return will add multiple miles. The 2 trails that tie in are JORDAN POND CARRY & BUBBLES TRAIL, both longer trails for MDI. SO, while EAGLE LAKE TRAIL is a lovely moderate hike w/varied terrain, it is less traveled than other trails in the area as it requires combination w/other trails & a longer hike.
Wander to the trailhead on the southeast corner of Eagle Lake on a Carriage Road from Bubble Pond Lot or JORDAN POND CARRY to Eagle Lake Carriage Road, then drop quickly to the shoreline of Eagle Lake. Head west for ~0.6 mi over a path of pine needles, roots, rocks & bog boards. Arriving at the JPC Trailhead, the trail continues on a slight incline over a bridge, bog boards to the top of the incline.
Here the trail terrain becomes more difficult as it drops down to a shore of boulders that need to be navigated. In either direction, this physical test comes quite a way in to the hike & can be tough mentally even if expected. Following this a pine-lined path leads the BUBBLES TRAIL Trailhead followed by a stone path up to the Eagle Lake Carriage Road.
What to do next is the question. Retracing your steps is an option. Walking in either direction on the ELCR adds MANY miles as this trailhead is at the farthest point from the starting trailhead. The other option, BUBBLES TRAIL can be cut short after Conners Nubble on the ELCR or North Bubble at BUBBLES DIVIDE. Either is fine and both lead back to JPC at different points. Knowing the options ahead of time and what they entail will make this hike more enjoyable. One of the only things I discourage in Acadia National Park is following the full BUBBLES TRAIL south & descending the steep south side of South Bubble.
I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to
ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome!
FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN...
the best times are had when planned properly.
Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia...
your hiking plan can include them as contingencies.
Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe...
cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park.
Remember: know your limits so you can push them,
and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you...
AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments...
(an option of leaving a tip: ie a link for actual tips through patreon is likely coming soonish).
