How was Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland formed: Geology and Irish Myths explain its creation // Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland is a fascinating geological wonder of our planet. The creation of Giant’s Causeway can be explained both both by geology and by Irish mythology (the one you chose to believe it’s up to you!). From a geological perspective, Giants Causeway was formed by ancient lava that moulded the nowadays famous hexagonal basalt columns. From a mythological perspective, Giants Causeway in Ireland was created by the ancient giant Finn McCool (Fionn MacCumhaill). He created Giant’s Causeway as a bridge across the water to Scotland’s Isle of Staffa, where his rival, a Scottish giant named Benandonner, resided. Whether you chose to believe in the Irish myth or the science behind the formation of Giant’s Causeway, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is marvel of Irish heritage, and part of our world heritage that is definitely worth visiting.
